07/10/2010 - IM240 TESTING NO LONGER REQUIRED IN WA
Following significant industry consultation, the Acting Director General of the WA Department of Transport, Mr Alastair Bryant, has now confirmed that the policy relating to the emissions testing of modified vehicles will revert to the policy prior to the implementation of IM240 testing requirements in April 2009.
Mr Bryant announced that 'vehicles subject to certain types of modification, such as the fitment of an aftermarket turbocharger, supercharger or modified camshaft, will still be required to demonstrate continued compliance with emissions requirements and may be required to undergo a five-gas analyser test'.
The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) has been actively involved in the working party process to attempt to draft an emissions testing policy incorporating IM240 as the primary test. Despite the best intentions of all participants, a workable policy could not be formed. As a result, testing requirements that applied prior to April 2009 will now apply. Discussions are continuing with the WA Department of Transport to outline guidelines for five-gas analyser testing. IM240 will still be an accepted test procedure but will no longer be mandated.
Stuart Charity, Executive Director, AAAA said 'this is a significant result for industry. Our members had highlighted grave concerns relating to this policy introduction. We appreciate the support of Minister Simon O'Brien and his Department in working together in achieving this outcome. We would also like to thank both the MTA-WA and IAME for their support with this vitally important issue'.
An meeting will be held in Perth in the coming weeks to discuss how this change in policy will affect the industry. It is important to reiterate that with immediate effect, no IM240 testing will be required for certification of vehicles in WA.
