17/10/2008 - AAAA ON TARGET
The 2007/08 year was an exceptional one for the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA). As well as achieving every performance target set, total membership grew a record 19 percent to 1243 companies, primarily driven by a number of new banner groups joining during the year.
Total membership has almost doubled in the last six years despite significant industry consolidation over that time which is testament to the expansion of the range and number of member services offered by the AAAA and its willingness to listen and respond to members' needs.
This strong growth in membership has provided AAAA with significant leverage in its efforts to represent members' interests with Government and regulators.
The last 12 months have been the busiest for some years with respect to AAAA's dealings with the various State and Federal Government Agencies that make decisions that impact on the manufacture, fitment and sale of aftermarket product.
Issues covered included exhaust noise, snatch straps, rear seat DVD players, frontal protection systems, coil-over suspension, warranty representations, alloy wheels, suspension heights and the sale of spray paint.
With the change of Federal Government late last year AAAA also prepared and presented submissions to the Bracks Review of the Automotive Industry and the Mortimer Review into Federal export policies and programs.
As a result of its strong financial performance over recent years, the AAAA National Council is now in a position to allocate significant funds in the 2008/09 budget to resource the development and roll out of a range of new industry initiatives over the next 12 months.
These funds will assist in delivering regular, targeted and accurate information on industry and product trends to assist AAAA members with their business planning as well as the development of a coordinated Government relations strategy covering industry, product and policy advocacy.
AAAA will soon launch a comprehensive online toolkit for employee recruitment and retention, which will provide hundreds of pages of reference material and templates in an online database.
AAAA has also recently appointed Kathryn Abbott to the position of Marketing and Research Assistant and former AAAA Director Ray Brown will join Automotive Aftermarket magazine in early 2009 as a technical writer.
