Three Sydney-based BMW technicians have taken out the inaugural Australian Sachs Masters competition held in Melbourne in July. BMW Sydney master technician and workshop foreman Shannon O'Neill and diagnostic technician Trent Moore teamed up with former colleague Adam Smith, who now works as a technical support specialist for BMW Australia, to win the competition. The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) supported event took place at the BMW National Training Centre in Mulgrave from July 24 to 26. AAAA's National Membership Manager, Ben Bartlett, was present for the Sachs Masters launch on the first day of the competition. ZF is the parent company of Sachs and ZF Australia General Manager, Klaus Hahn, launched the competition. He said as the number of electrical components in vehicles continues to rise, it was important that workshops were provided with the most up-to-date information. Mr Hahn said the Sachs Masters was created as a challenging event to test the expertise of participating teams. And Mr O'Neill, whose team was called BM United, can attest to the challenging aspect of the competition. "They provided us with eight tasks, all of which added up to nine hours worth of real time work but you had two-and-a-half hours to complete the tasks," Mr O'Neill said. "So it was up to the team to strategise and come up with a plan on how you were going to tackle each task." Mr O'Neill said an experienced technician would not find the tasks all that challenging is a normal workshop environment. "But given the time frame and skills required they were challenging," he said. "We definitely felt under pressure! "It might have seemed like an everyday task but given you had a very narrow timeframe there was definitely a challenging element to it." Mr O'Neill believed his BM United team completed six of the eight tasks. "There was one where we had 99.9 percent of the task complete and we just had to hook up one more wire, but we just ran out of time," he said. BM United received a cash prize of $10,000 and a trophy for its efforts. Next year's Sachs Masters will coincide with the AAAA Expo, which will be held from April 2 to 4 at the Sydney Exhibition Centre. For more information, visit the website www.sachsmasters.com
