The AAAA welcomes the review into the Australian automotive industry announced by the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Senator Carr in February which comes at a critical time for the future of manufacturing in Australia. The AAAA submission, which will be presented in June to the Review Panel led by former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks calls for:
- Recognition of the aftermarket as a legitimate part of Australia’s automotive manufacturing sector;
- Support programs to improve access to global supply chains and export markets;
- Broadening the eligibility criteria of the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme (ACIS) to provide an incentive for the aftermarket to invest in local manufacturing;
- A freeze on automotive tariffs at the current level of 10% until there is significant progress on the path to trade liberalisation by countries with which our industry must compete;
- Harmonisation of standards and regulations relating to the sale and final use of automotive parts, accessories, workshop tools and equipment;
- Incentives to employ and train apprentices and trainees and programs to address negative industry stereotypes.
